Embracing the Season of Lent: Ash Wednesday Mass at Ignatius Prep and Primary School

On Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, Ignatius Prep and Primary School observed Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the season of Lent. This day of reflection and renewal brought the school community together in a meaningful and spiritual way. The day’s activities were centered on the celebration of Mass, which set the tone for the season ahead.

The school’s morning assembly was the start of what would be a deeply spiritual day. Afterward, with the help of both the staff and pupils, all the necessary preparations for the Mass were made in Manresa Hall. This collaborative effort was a beautiful reminder of the sense of unity within the school community, with everyone contributing to make the day run smoothly.

The highlight of the day was the Mass, which was celebrated by Fr Sammy Wafula SJ. In his homily, Fr Wafula, reminded everyone of the significance of Lent. He spoke about the three key principles that Christians are called to embrace during this season: fasting, alms giving, and prayer. These practices help us to focus on our relationship with God and others, encouraging self-discipline, charity, and spiritual growth. His words resonated with the pupils, staff and teachers in attendance, offering valuable insight into the purpose of Lent and how each of us can live out these principles in our daily lives.

Following the homily, ashes were applied; this simple yet powerful ritual symbolizes the call to repentance and serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. It was a solemn moment for everyone to reflect on their faith and embrace the call to personal transformation during this sacred season.

The Mass was further enhanced by the school choir, whose beautiful singing added to the reverence of the occasion. The choir’s performance was a reminder of how music can elevate the spiritual atmosphere, helping everyone to focus on the significance of the Mass and the season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday at Ignatius Pre and Primary School was a meaningful occasion, filled with spiritual reflection and a sense of community. The celebration of Mass, led by Father Wafula, allowed everyone to enter the season of Lent with a renewed focus on the key practices that draw us closer to God. As the school continues its journey through Lent, the lessons learned from this day will undoubtedly continue to guide and inspire both pupils and staff alike.
